Poena Affectus
T J Rintoull

Sextant
Peering cautiously
Over the horizon
Step out
Undulating with the flow
Land ahoy
Destined

Why in such a hazardous state
Play with me to perilous fate
Lost in time the brigantine shade
Death a course is endlessly made

Leaf
Green
Colourless
Colourful
Hard to decide
Which is what
Who is where
Or how is why
Soon
Brown
Ends the problem

For what and why
Do we do
The things we do
And continue to ask
Why
We must do
What we are asked
To do

Ever lofty
Lost in thought
Tyrant of emotion
Standing bare
Mind naked
Sprain

He asked me
Where my off switch was
I replied
At the end of a razor blade
It’s all so predictable
Even
When I tell someone
How complex I am
They simply agree

Glowing sticks and flashing lights
Sordid drunken blues
Certain death and clowns in tights
Crusty flying shoes
Ghostly under moonlit sky
See their river run
Cheering reason’s safe demise
Carnival has come
All they know is hell and blood
Murder foul and true
Life to live and knife and cloak
Silenced by a few
Chilled by frost that can’t be seen
Still they think as one
A crown of thorns that never bleeds
Rotting in the sun

Children born of ignorance
Doused in dew and dust
Matted hair and ocean eyes
Children born of rust

I wish you'd pick up
When you ask me to call
That really smarts
Perhaps it was a hard day at therapy
But my day was hard too
Making the attempt
At perfect perverse normalcy
I hate it
And I love you
So pick up
When you ask me to call
And I will try
To brighten your day
Wipe away the tears
If need be
Perhaps we could even
Make the attempt
To talk
About something perfect
Or perverse
Or normal
Just pick up

WOMAN, FORMALLY KNOWN AS…

She: They stole you from me
My little baby
Blood and hate and curses
Not how I recall
Don’t tell me I’m not okay
I know your kind
I’ve always loved you see
Now come on back to me

He: Mother you’re insane
I cannot take your pain
Up a tree I am free
I just wish you’d never had me

She: I’d have been your mother
Better than those witches
I never tried to kill her
She took you from me little boy
I never starved your brother
He just refused to eat
Even though you’re twenty-four
Little baby evermore

He: Mother you’re insane
I cannot take your pain
Up a tree I am free
I just wish you’d never had me

I can’t believe I screwed it up
So bad
So bad
I can’t see
I would be capable
This madness is not me

I don’t understand
I’m not sure I ever did
Too bad
Too bad
I’m not here
I’m just a shadow
Another loss in the fog of creation
One of God’s forgotten children

I digress

I’m sorry really
I know it’s my fault
I’m bad
I’m bad
You bit a rotten apple
And that’s all you’ll ever see

Just be rid of me
It’s what you need
Take the antidote and leave
Let me wallow in my sorrow
Like everything else I’ve ruined
It will pass

So bad
So bad.

No

Don’t want to see you
Cause you are finally out
Go ride on what you said
Go now I’ve found you out

I don’t see the reasoning behind your words
Don’t you know they hurt
A life unseen is what you’ve been
And I trusted you
Put my faith in you

Don’t be my friend
This is the end
Don’t take my hand
I’ll make my own damn stand

Could have been a perfect world
All rainbows shining down
But you wouldn’t take it
You had to fake it
Hurt shirk burn and rape it
You wouldn’t take it
You wouldn’t take the truth.

FLOWERS

Abandoned by the mountainside
Through the reeds
Pushing out and there inside
A basket with me
Leaves hold up against the flow
Amnesty
Why they care they’ll never know
It’s family

On the day of sunrise
Dance the morning dew
Sing in a courtyard at night
Of how long we waited to bloom

I saw you on a crown of thorns
High above
Tears fell like a thunderstorm
What they’d done
Tossed away as they took him down
So unloved
Service far from family
You kissed the One

On the day of sunrise
Dance the morning dew
Sing in a courtyard at night
Of how long we waited to bloom

DARK MAN

1

I’m a dark man
Not in colour
Not in speech
But nevertheless
There’s a place inside my heart
Where I’m happy
And I’m flowing
In the cold and the dark
Ever since you went away
Temperatures are falling
I don’t want to stay
Living in me is so bad
It’s the worst life I think I’ve ever had

2

I don’t want to be a loser no not anymore
I’m not your explanation and I’m not your whore
I’m just exaggeration in a human skin
Another proclamation bent on caving in

I’m sick of all these answers I’m sick of my life
I’m nothing and I’m no one I wish I had a wife
There’s endless inspiration breaking up my heart
A helpless indignation I never made my mark

3

Stop complaining
Think of all the children
Dying in the street
So it’s not so bad
At least you had a TV
With colour at that
Yes we know she’s a little bit
Off the old block
Shameless
And a twit
But she had you like a fool
Twisted in her hair tie
What’s that say about you?

I know it’s over
I know the agony
My mistakes
Inflicted me
Upon you
Rage
Stupidity
The ending of something beautiful

It’s my sin

Yes I still love you
But you see it’s lost all meaning
For you
For me
Your point the finger
Quietly
Blaming me
Broken heart inside a boxroom

It’s on my head

You want to be my friend
You want it not to end
To live
In my pocket
And never be there
When I
Need you
Just as cold as you always were

I wash my hands

So I hate me
So I loathe me
You say
You love me still
So I
Needed you
So I
Hoped for you
So you smashed my mind

In my head

I know I’m crazy
I know I’m lazy
But you
The devil
Peaches in the dark
Stolen wishes
Broken diamonds
The Lord won’t save my heart

I’m so scared

You are my end of days
Blinding me with poisoned words
You bleed me
You need me
You scratch
My soul
You blame me
When at last I fall down and die

You are not mine.

Springtime brought me someone beautiful
For a weekend and a day
Her shattered heart and crushed up soul
Her tears all running away

She spoke of needing me

If she’s in the neighbourhood
She will keep me for a while
I’m too late to save her from herself
She’s got beauty in her smile

I know she’s not mine
Those tears are not mine
She’s a mother of five
But we’ll have forever
Just for tonight

I stand
Before the mirror
Shaven face
Waxen hair
Buzzing in my ears
Water on my hands
Droplets falling
Tears

Wind
Whipping wildly across my face
Sudden pain
Falling
Tumbling into white hot fire
Your flames
Burning out my soul
Caressing my heart with tender agonies
No longer do I need my sword
No defence can keep you from my company
Penitence is my ordeal
Kneeling before your burning bush
Hallowed hall of highest hope
Such is your esteem
And I
Yearning for long lost pastures
Look up
Lost in oceans and irises
Your gaze my world
There you stand
All my hopes
All my dreams
Once scattered
Whipped by winds of whimsy
Now coagulated
One cold clean cut
The severed head
Rolling away behind me
I never flinched
I never moved
My trust complete
You are my world
You are my only
Proof of undying devotion
Your sword
My life
Both still as one
The enemy lies dead on the fields of fire
And I remain
Kneeling devoted before my one true love
Knowing nothing
Only truth
That you would not yield
No
That in my defeat
You saw my only escape
You were not afraid
For me you shed blood and fire
Taking life and limb
Such is our sacrifice
The evening wind will carry us home.
