She Saw It All Liilia Morrison
She stands so still in timeless grace,
Thick robes of palest green,
A simple star crown round her brow,
In harbor’s mist oft seen.
The island’s lonely sentinel
Observed some merchants toil.
Long years of teeming buy and sell
Had hallowed this old soil.
Time passed. Then one day progress came.
This neighborhood would die,
While men of power and of pride
Tore up old blocks ‘mid cries.
The little stores with shabby crowds
Succumbed to grand, new plans.
The contest was no match at all -
A gambler’s ‘also rans.’
Two shiny towers later rose
Way high above the isle.
The green clad woman silent watched
Steel soar what seemed like miles.
One morning from a clear blue sky
Destruction roared and hit
Those pinions to the might of man.
She stood and braced with grit.
She saw them falling from the skies,
While walls collapsed like cards,
Yet stood and raised her torch of hope
To devastated hordes.
No heart remained the same that day,
For women, kids or men,
While courage and Old Glory, too,
Smashed evil’s chains again.
Tall beams of light to heaven rise,
Commemorate that spot,
Where Liberty in silence watched
That day no soul could blot.
She stands so still in timeless grace,
Thick robes of palest green,
A simple star crown round her brow,
In harbor’s mist oft seen.
