You speak of simple things and common folk.
Finding a quiet house
In some expanse of country
With a handsome plot of land.
You wish yourself to sink down
And hide away from all the world.
This I cannot understand
For with your gifts come
Great responsibility. How can
You yearn for such trivial
Things when you reside
Atop such a pedestal?
Why would you ask if you
Should abandon your life’s lot
In search for something simpler?
Away from the books filled with
Knowledge you must force
Into your wearied brain.
Why do you search for something better?
You speak of this simple life
As though there you find an earthly heaven.
But what of me?
Surely, I will be unhappy there.
For this scholarly realm is my own
And I could never bear to leave it.
You are fully welcome to belittle
The frenzy of your life,
The unhappy way you fill the hours
Of your day.
Your sorry, chosen spot.
But how could you
Ever find fault in me?
