Straying From The Path
Wolfa

Sitting in the class
Observing their actions
Their petty taunts and dreams
Absorbing the formula for success
Pouring from the mouths of mentors
Seeing life now as a formula
Procedures and outcomes defined
Disillusionment eats my dreams
Others who feel this sickness of society fall
Suicide seems a recurrent theme

Walking between classes
Catching the hot bright scent of the city
Slipping now quietly through the halls
Through the door
Through the parking lot and beyond
Content for always in the embrace of the city
Living quickly in the sun

I read in the bookstore by the highway
Neutrinos and quarks and the Schwarzchild Radius
Back in class, they repeat their faded lines
Old and worn-out dialogues replayed
Some of them take drugs and fall that way
Others refuse and turn away
But all of them are stuck in rigid roles
And all of them end up…empty….
I wander to the outdoor mall coffee shop
And I talk to the barista
I sit in the sun outside the café and sketch
The occasional tourist walking by

A stray dog in the scenic section is my friend
I name her Rocky Road
And feed her chicken from Hooters
That someone left lying on an outside table
When it rains I laugh and dance beneath the cold dark skies
To the glad music of keening wind and roaring thunder
I go to Miami International
I doze in the lobby and watch the people
Silver planes flash through the air
I read about aviation
Outside the duty-free gift shop

I sleep through the mornings
Stretched out across two seats
On the Metrorail
Flying through my sun-scented city
I go to the huge flea market in the warehouse district
Then downtown
I sit beside the narrow street with the Spanish music blaring
I drink fizzy fruit-flavored soda and a pitbull puppy dozes on my boots
A homeless man gave him to me
Later I'll name him Taft and find him a home

I could return to the school
But I am tired
A weary actor playing through my lines
We learn nothing slowly and forget quick
I do not want this faltering play to continue
I do not want to forget that it is an act
And to believe that life is a formula
I do not want this world anymore

I slip out of the door each day now
And into the sun-bright streets
I wander the tourist traps and malls and lazy ways
I perch outside a thousand outdoor cafés
I sketch the beauty of the city and the life that stretches on
I write the songs the city whispers to me
I read of astrophysics, aviation, literary techniques, zoology
The people in the bookstores know me now
There is a homeless man who sits here every day and reads
He is my brother though we never speak
I bask in this silent communion that we who have fallen share

Maybe later I'll go sit by the fountain in the artsy district
Underneath the overhang;
Concrete molded with fanciful bas-reliefs
With pen in hand
And a stray dog curled at my feet
Maybe I'll remember my dreams again
I'll look out at the cobblestone square
With the little kiosks selling trinkets
And wait for this rain to stop.
