Streetlight Michael Schmitt
Not enough people write about streetlights. I sit under one now on a parkbench, notebook in hand, light flooding the dark world around me. The darkness reaches out for me, but I tease it back. My streetlight shines its ribbon of light around me, and I am safe. O but how they want me, they grasp at me, the darkness. I see them, monsters and demons, reaching out with tongues of shadow and claws of night, growling nightmares with their mouths that open into the void itself. I am under a streetlight, the void means nothing. So I laugh and write and ponder and disregard the voices and the screams and the hands reaching out around me.
why do you laugh?
Because you try so hard but fall so short.
I am superior, I look up from writing, diengage from my thoughts. The encircle and swarm and snarl and spit and the void screams at me, blowing cold wind of nothingness across my face, blowing my notebook pages. Evil dark eyes burn into me, daring me to come forward, to meet my match...to come from the light NO i will not. A snarl and dark smoke begins to rise.
come to us, dance in the darkness and meet the void
I will not, I need no void.
I go back to my writing, ignoring the darkness once again. I am superior, I tell myself, I am under my streetlight. The light washes over me and keeps me safe. The void is but an idea, I am too tired. No, another scream, the stuff of nightmares assaults my ring of safety and suddenly I am afraid. So afraid. The eyes burn again and this time it is me who screams, my pen falls to the pavement beneath.
the streetlight goes out.
