Tale Of A Large Menace
Kyle J Douglas

In days of old, there lived a king
Who governed o’er the land of Jing

The kingdom was wealthy, its people at ease
As powerful as the tallest of trees

Yes, the land was happy until one day
A great beast from the woods came searching for prey

‘Twas large as a tower, it hopped down the road
‘Twas a dragon resembling a very large toad

It came every night in the darkness so deep
It came to the town to devour the sheep

After dining at night it made a loud groan
It chewed up the sheep and then spit out the bones

When the king heard of this, he was very distressed
“O drat!” he exclaimed, “Let’s be rid of this pest!”

Now sheep were the primary source of food
And the people were now in a very foul mood

They also used sheep for most of their clothing
The great creature soon aroused their loathing

In fact, the sheep outnumbered the men
But by now, this lizard had eaten ten

“Alas!” the king cried, “I can take it no more!
Methinks I should deal with this dumb carnivore.”

So he summoned his knights, every last one
Then waited for all of his brave men to come

He said, “Good knights, I have for you a quest.
To the monster I will send the one who is best.”

He selected the boldest and strongest of knights
Who was tough and able but not very bright

“Make haste,” the king said “and go with all speed!
Now from the royal stables I will fetch you a steed.”

The knight picked the finest of the king’s royal sheep
Then rode off on its back down the hill so steep

Accompanied by his faithful sidekick
A stable boy armed with a really big stick

“'Ere the sun rises we’ll be at its lair.
I’m starting to wish we were riding a mare.”

As they rode on, a thief from the woods
Attacked the two men, searching for goods

The knight tried to fight but soon realized
He’d forgotten his sword, which was his demise

The thief knocked him out with a quick, hard hit
Then disarmed the boy, threw his stick in a pit

He decided to spare this miserable slob
The boy had nothing, hence he couldn’t be robbed

They rode off together on the knight’s stolen sheep
Then stopped outside a big cave to sleep

However, this cave was the dragon’s lair
The beast attacked the unlikely pair

The poor sheep ran away, leaving them alone
They couldn’t outrun the toad, it was known

They struck at the dragon with the thief’s swords
But the monster was undamaged by the weapons of war

At last the thief pierced the great reptile’s heart
The beast promptly died, caught off its guard

Just one minor problem they did not foresee
When the dragon had died, it fell on the thief

The crook was now dead, but no one gave a darn
They were just glad the sheep were safe in the barn

Now the moral of this story, the lesson we’ve learned:
Stealing isn’t good; it always gets you burned
