The Biggest Problem Facing Nigeria This Century
Kennedy O Obohwemu

Every country in the world is faced with one trouble or the other.Nigeria,
a developing country in Africa,is no exception to this rule. The country has
has encountered nightmares in the past, but no other cankerworm has eaten
more deeply than bribery and corruption.
Bribery, the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary defines,is the act of
giving a sum of money, service or the like,to somebody in return for some,
often dishonest, help.Corruption refers to any dishonest or wicked behaviour.
Nigeria has experienced this ugly phenomenon at all levels of national
development. Its fruits have been traced to the family, age group, and the
society at large. The spell has spread so rapidly that virtually everyone is
involved. If one is not involved in corrupt practices, one is benefitig from
them.
The family is the first agent of socialisation of a child, and virtually
every problem in the society could be traced to the family. The average
Nigerian family, like every other family in sub-Saharan Afriac, still struggles
hard for dialy upkeep of its members. There's little surprise therefore that
parents do not fail to indulge in some corrupt practice. In the academic sphere,
parents have been implicated who purchase examination answers for their wards.
Some are ready to pay heavily for special examination centers where a
'stress-free' examination is guaranteed.Youths and adolescents alike are not
helping matters. The mind of the Nigerian youth, like any other in the realm of
juvinescence,is saturated with artificiael intellectualism and jet-age
mentality. He believes that intellectual development, without spiritual
development,is the gateway to the highest achievement in life.By this he
shuts himself from the vision of divine reality, and suppresses the dictates
of his inner conscience when confronted with the temptation of having material
gains.
The mentality cultivated at home is reflected in the society.Permit me here
to point out the negative effects the government of the country have had on the
youths.Yes,youths have been rather restive in the country in the past years, but
the truth is "Youth isn't the problem;it's the excuse".Government will always
do the right thing, after they have exhausted all other alternatives.Leaders who
openly rig elections at the polls are not worth the candle.Blaming youths for
civil unrest is baseless, fallacious and grossly misleading.
The issue of national security is a topic to be treated another day,but
suffice it to say that a country whose leaders hunt themselves down is a
country divided, and no meaningful economic, social or political activity can take
place therein. For crying out loud,no individual is safe any more, not even in
his own country!
Leaders who bribe their way to positions of authority will cause nothing
but ruin.Looting the nation's treasury is a deliberate act condemned by law,but
who dare accuse our leaders of corrupt practices when they are the makers of the
law?" The problem with Nigeria rests in the hands of our leaders",a fellow youth
once said."Their minds overflow with corrupt ideas and practices".
Nigeria has been scourged by the menace of bribery and corruption for too
long.Internal revenue drops sharply as fluctuations are recorded every year in
the country's Gross Domestic Product, the foreign exchange market is the worse
for it,investors are scared for their lives no less the citizens, the country's
image is marred overseas...what a headache!
Nigeria, the giant of Africa, sailing through seas of unending difficulties...A
country with a rich diverse cultural heritage unmatched by no other in every sense
of the word...A country that has recorded exploits the world over...How come
she's suddenly fallen asleep? It's been 44 years of independence, surely she has
much to show for it.This slimy worm of bribery and corruption must not eat
deeeper than it already has.Eliminiting the evil of bribery and corruption is a
conscious effort demanding participation by government and it's many partners.
For lasting solutions, parents need ensure the proper upbringing of their children
with close supervision and expeditious amendment of any irregularity in behaviour.
Education remains the key.Inculcating in the young the spirit of discipline is an
act never regretted. To cleanse the Augean stables, government need ensure provision
of full employment opportunities vis-a-vis equitable distribution of resources.
Bribery and corruption is no evil new in this country. It has emanated from
selfish ambitions and negative attitude to work.Every citizen need be cautious of
his orientation to life.Redefine values and redirect principles. There is a hidden
mine in every life;nature never made any failures. It's a product of personal
conviction and of a conscious and deliberate attemt at self assertion. It is my
credence therefore that if the measures elucidated in this write-up are implemented,
the country will stand again...to fall no more. And what is more, the pathetic situation
of the country will be replaced with internal peace and external encomium.Long live
the youths of the Federation!Long live the Federal Republic of Nigerria!
