The Dog
P J Francis

He stood, leashed to the grey lamp post, patiently awaiting his time to be free. He had lost all sense of time-time was by now slow and meaningless. A large cumbersome man, bearing a greasy hamburger strutted past him, pausing slowly to pat at the bedraggled head. The smell was greatly enticing, and the dog pitifully attempted an eager wag of his feathered tail. It was not enough, the man passed by, munching his fat chops through the sublime flesh. The dog barked his displeasure. A sudden spatter of heavily laden rain dropped ungraciously on the dogs head, and turning his face up, he whimpered at the threat. He sat down on his haunches, wincing as his arthritic bones creaked. He wished bitterly that his owner would return, to let him go, to untie the hated warped and stiff leather leash that held him for eternity to the lamp post. He shivered, his sparse elderly fur no shield against the sudden onslaught of the ever changing climate. It was no good. They had surely left him to his own defences, and he cried pitifully at the unexpected betrayal that his good, kind masters had bestowed upon him. He closed his large brown languid eyes, his heart aching heavily. A soft voice near his floppy, torn ear made him glance up expectantly. He opened his mouth, and his pale pink tongue lolled out, like a pink rolled carpet. He almost smiled as the man, his master undid his leash.

"Nearly forgot you there, Old Boy!" the man said quietly.
