The Garden Of Edenia--Chapter Thirteen--Song Desi Williams
“So are you going to offer any explanation for yesterday?” Serena asked the next day. They met in the exact same place where they had met before. “Like maybe the lion or the portal thingy coming out of nowhere? Where did you go? Was it into the thingy?”
“Well, the lion is my pet, Sacra. He and I live together. He tends to get a little over protective. I scolded him and he apologized. Don’t give me that look. I can understand animals, okay? Anyways. The portal, well, that’s a rip in the space-time continuum. You follow what I’m saying, right?”
“Not really. I sort of do,” Serena yawned, “but explain that some other time. Continue.”
“Okay, well, a portal appears for a couple reasons, and in this case it was both. You and I, dare I say it,” she slyly remarked, “expressed, at least on a cognitive level, some allure towards one another. A portal always appears at that time; at least, for me. Yes, I did go into it. The thingy, as you call it.”
“Where did it lead?”
“I can go anywhere. At that time, I went to my home.”
“Which is where, exactly?”
“Well, I was wishing to show you my Garden of Edenia. My special place. When I call that up, a portal will appear then, as well. And for your information,” she replied, “it’s not a place; it’s a state of mind.”
“Oh.” Serena looked at her. “So. What do you know about me, Edie? Do you know I’m bisexual? Oh, and did you know my mom is going to kick me out of the house because of it? Yeah. I’m a bisexual Wiccan vampire with no place to go or call my own…”
“I’m bisexual, too, sweetheart,” Edie confided. “My parents, however, accepted me. They’re like that. It’s sad to say not all people are. And I’m all the other things you just said, too, though you already knew I was a vamp.”
Serena jumped up. “May I come?” She inquired.
“Come where?” Edie grinned.
“I think you know where!” she exclaimed. “The Garden of Edenia, as you so eloquently put it. Very original by the way. The name, you know.”
“Quite. But just to let you know, the Garden of Edenia is whatever you make it to be. I know what yours is because I’ve been following you for a while. And I do know there is someone there who would really like to meet you.”
“Who? Who?” Serena squealed.
“That’s for me to know and you to find out, my dear,” she answered mysteriously.
“Fine, be that way,” grumbled Serena.
“Why don’t we just go and you can meet him.”
Serena perked up instantly. “Him?! Is he hott? D —”
“I don’t think he would like you to think of him that way.” Edie shook her head. “You are still rather young. You wouldn’t know ‘hott’ for real if it bit you in the armpit! Besides, he thinks of you quite differently…”
“Do I know him?”
“You knew him at one point in your life, yes. You don’t know him now, though.”
“Enough of this!” Serena said excitedly. “How do we get there?”
“I’ll let you figure that out. Just think of the best time, place or event in your life, and that’s the Garden. Mine really is a garden, in Rome. It reminded me of the Garden of Eden, because there were two trees in the middle, one with olives and one with apples. You’re not supposed to eat that kind of olive, you know. Anyways, go ahead. Come on now, we haven’t all day!” Edie told her.
“God, you sound like a grandmother! Okay, okay, I’m thinking,” she retorted when Edie glared at her. Already the scenery had begun to change into a rowdy, happy, bustling fairground. Hot dog fumes and cotton candy sugary sweetness enveloped them as leaves of rust and scarlet and amber danced and rustled at their feet. Then, Serena heard something she had thought she would never hear again.
“This is for my sweet country bumpkin, my pretty, perfect princess, my inspirational angel,” boomed the voice over the grandstand speakers. It was John, Serena’s father.
“Can you see me/ Am I here/ Are you far/ or am I near/ A wisp of smoke/ a trail of tears/ A charming bloke/ a thousand years.”
Serena’s emerald eyes began to spill over, the sea green liquid cascading in diamond droplets down her face.
“Oh my, what’s wrong, dear?” questioned Edie, knowing full well the story.
“That’s my song. I wrote it and he put it to music on his guitar. I —” She broke out in sobs.
The song continued. “Can you see me/ Am I real/ Am I numb/ or can I feel/ Are we dead/ Dude what’s the deal/ Don’t let me sit/ I’ll just congeal… Can you see me/ Alive and well/ Do you register me/ I can’t tell/ Maybe I’m/ just a smell/ that contorts your nose/ you infidel.”
“Daddy!” Serena cried.
“Can you see me/ though dead and gone/ Forget your life/ Don’t move on/ Become your fears/ and become your song/ then look at the sun/ and become the dawn.”
The girls sat on the multi-colored bleachers. Serena then realized something. She turned to Edie. “You’re a ghost, aren’t you?” Serena asked quietly, firmly, gently, tears in her eyes. “That’s the only way you would know my dad. I can’t believe I didn’t figure it out before… I mean, you were the shadow outside my window, weren’t you? No,” she said as Edie started to explain, and she held up her hand. “Don’t worry. It doesn’t bother me any. I have something I would like to talk to you about, though, while we’re in a safe environment.”
