The Garden Of Edenia--Chapter Two--Group Desi Williams
Serena had become best friends with Jolene through a “women’s only” sexual abuse group. Both had spilled their souls to a dozen or more strangers, and in that time, came to knew each other very well. However, one slight difference lay before them. Jolene and Serena were both raised Catholic, and so therefore had been taught strict views about society. When new opinions and thoughts about the world arose in the group, though, it was then that the girls had to decide whether to stick to their old beliefs or embrace the interesting new things set before them. Serena, being bold, articulate, and accepting, ran with it. Jolene was more stubborn, and she always wanted to do what would please her parents.
One of these new views was sexuality. The leader, Susan, said, “It is perfectly normal to question and ponder your sexuality after being molested, raped, or harassed, especially if it was by a man. In this case, you would most likely feel uncomfortable around most men, even if you were the most resilient woman on the planet. You would find solace in women, as friends, companions, or even life partners.” At first, Serena didn’t fully understand what she meant, but soon came to realize that Susan was talking about gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people as well as straight heterosexuals. This really threw Serena for a loop.
Another big issue Susan brought up was religion. “I myself am Wiccan,” she explained, and she went on and talked about how, after sexual abuse, people were more likely to inquire about a lot of things, including their sexual and religious natures, preferences, and orientations.
The last thing discussed was drugs and alcohol. Susan definitely didn’t condone it, but she was willing to accept, while there were healthier ways to deal with their angst, some people had to develop habits to keep them going. “Hey, whatever gets you through the day,” she joked. However, she did share a few things about her life with the group. “I began smoking and drinking long before I ever moved out of the house, but started more heavily once I was in my own place and by myself. As most of you know, my father molested, raped, harassed, and beat my mother, my two sisters and me. He only stopped after I threatened to beat him and call the police. That’s why I started smoking and drinking.
“Did you know,” Susan asked, “that sexual abuse victims are four times more likely to smoke than other women? And did you know,” she continued, “that childhood sexual abuse victims are twice as likely to smoke before fourteen? Proven fact!” She smiled.
Before the group had adjourned, Serena made the most amazing, hurtful, and helpful decision she would ever make: she was bi. And moreover, she loved Jolene.
