The Heart Behind The Shield

“Would you just buzz off??”
“Alex, please...”
“Don’t ‘Alex...please’ me, Trent.”
“Alright, I’m sorry. What do you want from me? Why are you always like this?”
“I don’t want anything from you, Trent. I thought that maybe, just maybe, you’d realize it on your own. I’m only like this when I get pissed off. And right now, I’m pissed off.” Alex folded her arms in front of her chest, her face contorted with anger and pain.
Trent was the calm one, the one who didn’t seem to know what he’d done wrong. Alex continually told herself that guys never did know what they did wrong, and never seemed to care anyway. She had a rule with guys: Don’t get too attached and don’t actually fall in love with the guy. From past experience, Alex knew all the resulted in was a load of heartache and tears, and Alex wasn’t the teary kind of girl. She hid behind a tough outer shield, convinced nobody could actually break it down and get close to her. But this time...She felt like Trent was different, but cleared her head of the thought almost immediately. He wasn’t different...he was just another guy.
“Then would you tell me why you’re angry? I know I’m supposed to know this, but right now, I don’t. I know it’s something I did, and if it helps any, I’m sorry. But knowing you, it probably won’t mean anything.” Trent threw up his arms in frustration, yet, although he was frustrated, he was determined to get Alex to open up to him and even though fighting wasn’t the way, she needed someone and he knew it.
Alex was silent for a time, fuming, but obviously not knowing what to say. The look that came across her face...it amazed Trent. For once, her eyes weren’t cold and didn’t have flares of angry in them. Instead, for just a split second, Alex’s gray eyes had a twinge of sadness in them, mixed with the first soft-glance Trent had ever recieved from her. When Alex looked at him, both him and her knew something was going on.
“You’re the only one who’s confronted me like this..” Alex said softly , running a tanned hand through thick blonde hair, and beginning to almost shake at the knees. After realizing what she’d said, Alex pasted that angry act back over the real her that was starting to show. “I don’t need to tell you a goddamn thing, Trent. ‘Cause I don’t know what to tell you. Just leave me alone.” Alex ran out the big double doors of Arbor High School and tore off down the parking lot, Trent—surprisingly—went after her. He didn’t know why, but he did.
Trent did catch up to her, just before Alex was about to cross the street to go to her house. He stretched out an arm and caught just her shoulder, but it was enough to stop the 15-year-old girl from crossing and leaving him with no explanation as to why she was the she was and what he had done wrong.
“I said leave me alone, Trent. Is that so hard to comprehend?” Alex did not turn to face him, instead staring at the other side of the dusty, gray road and concentrating a shrub.
“Right now, yes, it is. All I’m asking is an explanation as to why you are this way and what I did so wrong.” Trent was almost pleading for an explanation, something he was very good at because Trent’s the kind of person who wants an explanation. 9th grade guys at Arbor didn’t tend to plead. The other guys tended to think they were pansies if they did that. Either you were macho, or you were a pansy. There was no in between; Trent was a pansy to most people.
Alex twisted out of the grasp of his hand and glanced over her shoulder at him, looking directly into his green eyes and wishing she’d never been involved with him in the first place. Deep down, she did know that he cared about her, and that made he regret it even more. She ran across the road and down Maple Street, unable to talk to Trent for fear she’d show her true self.
Alex and Trent may not have had the best relationship, for reasons that are rather obvious. She was lying to him, but he was determined to change her. Although Trent had nearly succeeded in helping her, he’d still failed. But there was one thing Alex had taught him in just those few minutes: There’s a heart behind every temper, a heart behind every lie, and a heart behind every shield.
