The Locket D G Williford
It was the winter of 1835. My husband Elijah and I had just left
everything that we knew of home and headed for the unknown. My
family was from the Old Country and did not take to Elijah, him being
brought up in the New World. We decided as a couple, being as in
love as we were, to just mark our own path in this big open space we
called America.
I remember how bitter cold it was when we left home. I sat in the
front of the wagon, trying not to shiver as I held the lantern for
Elijah to see as he harnessed the team. The horses stomped their
hooves, ready for any challenge ahead of them. I tucked the lap robe
around my legs more tightly and caught a look of excitement in my
husband's eyes. He was ready for the change as well as me. We
were off to a new chapter of our lives. One of challenge and newness
that only an adventurer could imagine.
Elijah, having readied the team, came to sit beside me on the
frontboard. He looked me in the eyes and shot me a devilish wink
that we alone knew the meaning. He took my chin in his large hands
and cradled it like a child’s, whispering how much he loved me. Then
his hand reached between my breasts and fondled the gold locket
around my neck. He picked it up and kissed it. It was a picture of
us in Tombstone the day after we were married. It held such precious
memories for us both. Anyone that looked at that picture knew that
we were so desperately in love. Elijah whistled the team into action
and we set out on our adventure.
I was so cold that I could not stop shivering despite the blankets
over my lap and the heat from the lantern. Elijah noticed this and
forced me to get into the wagon amongst the many quilts. I kissed
him on his cheek and he gave me that wink that told me everything
would be all right.
I curled up amongst the many quilts our family had given us as
wedding presents and tried to sleep. But sleep would not come. The
traveling dress that I was wearing was of the thinnest cotton and I
was chaffed from shivering. I dare not complain since my beloved was
out in the cold spiriting us to a new life. The dress was made by my
great Auntie Sophie from New England. She loved a good laugh. I was
paying for that laugh as I tried to get comfortable in the wagon.
Elijah and I wanted a child so badly and we prayed daily for God to
bless us. I had not had the curse in several weeks and was almost
positive that I was with child. I did not want to tell Elijah, lest
I get his hopes up, but I was so excited that I could hardly contain
myself. I figured that I was probably about nine weeks or so seeing
as how I had no medical doctor to examine me. I was so sure that I
was pregnant that I drew a picture of Elijah, myself and the baby
under the flap of the wagon cover. I would show it to him when the
time was right.
Every bump and jolt was making me sick. I leaned out the wagon three
times that Elijah didn't know about to relieve my queasy stomach. I
knew now without a doubt, that I was with child. I held back the
wagon flap and looked at the picture that I had drawn of the three of
us.
Sometime during the night, I had fallen asleep. I awoke to the
strange sounds of a language that I did not know. The next thing I
heard was a hiss as the smoking arrows hit our wagon and it burst into
flames. The smoke hit my nostrils like a hot fist. I could not
breathe. I was choking and yelling for Elijah. I crawled through the
smoke in my great Aunt's dress looking for my husband. The whole
time clinging to my locket, hoping that it would connect us.
I would never see my Elijah alive again. I found him with an arrow
in his chest. He was clutching the wagon flap. How he knew that the
picture of his soon to be family was there, I will never know. I did
not leave his side for many hours. I held him until someone pried me
away.
The next day, I was sitting in Fort Mill and an officer asked me if
he could do anything for me and I touched my locket and held my
stomach and told him no thank you. I would be fine. It was at that
moment, that I felt my baby kick for the first time and I knew that
everything would be alright. I had a part of Elijah that neither time nor man, would ever take away.
I went on to live a long and happy life in the mountains of Montana.
I never remarried but I was happy. Elijah Jr. and his wife have
given me two strong grandsons.
I thank God.

"My reaction after reading this story was utter disbelief. Before reading this, i made assumptions as to what the story would be about. My assumptions were completely wrong. The author used strong imagery and very descriptive words to help me better imagine that cold winters night. Although the story took a turn for the worst, it ended on a very positive note. Very nice work!" -- ashley, mckeesport, pa, 15132.
