DESCRIPTION
The play, The Shoe Box, is about second chances. Fancy O'Brien wants to be a good mother and works her self to death on a poor dirt farm in the Appalachia of the South, during the early 1940's. She wants her daughters to think well of her and wants to forget her early history when she was a loose woman. She wants to forget that her father, Pap, killed her lover Jimmy Miller. She wants to forget that his brother, Johnny, is the father of her daughter Wendy. Johnny wants a second chance to get to know his daughter Wendy. He has done time in prison. Fancy has warned him to stay away from her daughter. One night, drunk, Johnny comes to their home banging on the door. Fancy grabs the gun and shoots him dead. Mam, her mother, says that she has to think quick for the police will be there soon. Fancy grabs the banjo away from Sammy, a simple but gifted artist, and shoves the gun into his hands. Sammy is wrongly sent to prison for Johnny's murder, so Fancy can be there to see that her daughters survive the hard day to day existence on the poor dirt farm. There are two scenes in the shoe box. Wendy makes these of clippings from magazines and pastes them in the box. She dreams of a nice home one day. In the last scene of the play, the characters are in the shoe box.
FANCY Sammy, I want to tell you a lot of things.
SAMMY After they hang me.
FANCY Yes, Sammy, after they hang you. Then, maybe, we can all find some rest.
