The Wars Of Belfast Part 1. Sasu
Temple McGeady was a dick, he was a hardnut irish bully
who stalked the streets at night drunk, looking for a
fight or two, his will was impregnable to other's who
were on the recieving end of his territoral battle.
His streets were the Kilkenny attractions, the near middle
class area in the St Josephine end of Belfast. The city
itself was in dire straits, it was 1986, coal mines and
shipyards were either closed down or closing down, the city
was expecting a major unemployment wave to come in the very near
future. People began to fight amoungst themselves with the workers
classed as snobs and the majority of unemployed who are the real workers
in this world getting by on nothing but squabbling and nit-picking between themselves
to salvage anything they could.
Sudden unemployment is a disastourous thing to do to people who rely
heavily on the wage they earn and earn hard, they felt let down by a
Government they voted in to help them with economic success, not to
be stripped of any hope for the future.
The people fought and fought constant between themselves, Religion is always
an argument bringer but to have to much time on your hands and to be as
passionate in Religion as many were was always going to happen.
The people fought for territory, money, and overall power of the streets.
A gang war created out of love if not hate roared into fashion in late 1986.
Temple McGeady was the soon to be leader of the R.L.B. (Royal Loyalists of Belfast),
his bravery, williness to do his job, and general state of mind he was always in, complete
madman. He would soon battle with the current occupiers of his wanted section in
St. Josephine's.
The leader of the N.R.I (National Greens Infantry) was a valued member of the community,
and peace wanter his gang ruled through justice, not in the police sense, his aim was to
give his country he loved back it's pride, and it's money that had been stolen by certain
British Super Powers...
Donnal O' Driscoll fought for nothing his whole life untill the government stole everyone's
right's as humans! to exsist as an equal under the same governement. Did that happen? No.
So war's were needed, not for the first time, against such trechory.
His gang needed to lay down the law in their territory, some resisted and were punishable by
any means neccessary by the gang, the meaning for the people wasn't really the point, the irish
love to fight and as great as they are, there very hot headed at the best of times.
There was never an excuse for what has and still today goes on, killing another human
regardless of their beliefs is unacceptable. Sometimes it can't be avoided but most of the time
it can.
"It was a wintry Saturday afternoon, snow had fell for hours that day but there wasn't ..you know
anything strange going on. I was out shopping that day with my wife, you know the usual crack with
the trying everything on but not able to afford anything. Then suddenly everything went totally silent
for about a second then there was a massive explosion outside the shop, glass went everywhere and I was on
the deck within a second, I got heaps of bloody cuts...look, that one nearly severed my thumb off. So... and...
the second one exploded, then all I could remember was people screaming and running about in panic, not knowing
whether another car was going to explode next to them or not."
"what happened in the shop em.. 'Galloways' you were in?" the officer asked.
Aiden took a couple of seconds " well.... bloody everyone was dead or dying or screaming for help, it was utter
shite, and all because someone wanted to make a name for themselves"
"What do you mean by that,Aiden?"
"You know, the R.L.B. the fecking wankers, who want the streets, Oh come on please tell me this is not news to you?"
"Off course not n"
Aiden butted in "You do know about these fecking idiot's then, why isn't there anythi.." he stopped in defeat of the
point he was about to make. Why isn't more done to stop this from happening.
"look, we have known about these fool's for about two months now, but there was never any possible clues that would have told
us this was about to happen, these guys were petty in their approach, they were no threat"
"what about now? Did you really think that Temple was fecking about, it was common knowledge he meant serious business from the start,
who gives you your fecking info."
Thursday 23rd December, 1986.
The day's leading up to this moment for Donnal were days of nerve wrecking pain, his stomach churned every moment of every day, he knew it was
a make or break fight for his gang, he doubted his army, and at times himself, he feared Temple McGeady as most did, he didn't like the prospect
of meeting him, but he didn't exactly want to hand the streets over to him neither, he had to make some choices, some that he could not change.
McGeady's army was a force to be reckoned with, a reputation that already was bigger than Donnal's for his partaking in the Nine bomb explosion on
Main Street, killing fourteen, including two children.
He was seemingly immune from punishment as his crew were a crazy as he was, when some of there members were arrested in November he simply walked into
a bank robbed it and paid for their release.
So the night had come in December, the fight that would decide the streets of South Belfast.
The fight that would certainly end in death for some, and hospitalisation for others.
The victor would rule.
O' Reilly's scrapyard was the place requested by Temple, Donnal agreed, it was a place on the edge of the city, an industrial arena of old, now it was a
scarce land of memory and empty space. Nine o' clock was the time given by Donnal, it was 8:51pm, the night grew cold and was icy, a white sheet lay over
the land and scrap around them. Donnal got his men in there before Temple's men arrived getting the best position but leaving themselves trapped at the
same time. They stood in the cold anxiously waiting, praying, hoping.
Donnal looked at his watch again, 8:53pm, he let out a nervy sigh. Time was approaching fast.
He then heard they noise he had been dreading to hear, cars, and plenty of them, Donnal had 45 men, that should be enough!
Car after car pulled up outside the scrapyard, the men able to see the light's flickering in between the metal poled fence.
"Right, are we ready for this" Donnal shouted as he turned to his own men.
"We just go straight into them, no fecking about,... hammers, chains, knives, whatever, just get stuck in." Donnal was getting his men in the mood, Temple's men
were gathering at the main gate, about 20 of them were there but more kept following, soon there was 50, but more followed and by the time Donnal turned back around
there was 70 of them, waiting, looking for individuals to go for. They were also armed with bats, golf clubs, knives, chains, and what ever could be found to cause injury..
Donnal's men looked in despair, there was no chance they would win, Temple walked to the front of his army..
"I want O' Driscoll" he softly said, he started running towards them, the other 69 followed...
