The Waves They Tell Me Amarjit Bhambra
Like troubled water
We had to pick Robert and Jack from school, I looked outside and it was snowing. I had no choice but to take Ruby with me. I put on her fairly warm coat, and put her in her pram and as usual we got to school on time. It was freezing, we came home straight away. Ruby was still asleep in the buggy. I went to get her out. As soon as I picked her up, she went into a fit. Her eyes rolled back and her hands turned inwards. I panicked and rang 999, my kneighbour came running, she got the lady across the road, who was a nurse. I couldn’t understand why she wanted Ruby striped down quick. Than she soaked a fennel and put it on her body. We rushed her to Hospital. They said that she had a convulsion fit. After a couple ot day I took her home. I bought for forehead tempureture reading and made sure I had plenty of colpol for her to keep her temperature down so that she would not fit again. I managed to keep the at bay. Even though I must admit that she was kept in hospital a coulple of times more.
When we would go shopping with ruby in the pram, that is when she was 2 ½ years old She would always cry out for baby dummies.
‘I never gave those to you when you were a baby and now you want dummies’, I said. But still for a peace of mind I got her one, and the next trip it was another one and another one. She would have one ring on her first finger, and the next ring on the second finger and the third ring on her third finger.
On another occasion, she started to demand that she wanted nappies, you don’t wear those anymore I said. But she caused a scence and started to cry out loud. I didn’t really wanted to buy her sweet to make her stop crying as I didn’t want her to spoil her teeth. I couldn’t afford no toys beside it wasn’t her birthday so to stop her crying on this occasion I did buy her a small packet of sweets just to keep her quite.
As we went to the end of the long que. An old woman made a loud remark.
‘we were wondering when you were going to buy her those sweet, she’s been crying for them long enough’,
You just cann’t win I thought.
Because of this, ruby was growing up to be a spoil child, we did not like to tell her off and she always got what she wanted for her birthday. I paid less attention to the boys, as she would get very jealous of them. When she was 3 she would like to wear trouser trying to be like them. One day, I wanted to take her out shoping. As we walked around she started to play up. I pretended to ignore her, so in the busy shoping area she lay on the floor crying out very loudly. I asked the shop assistance to tell her off, but everyone kept ignoring me. I went up to her, as I was getting very impatient, I went to pick her up, but she started to kick me. I got hold of her and she bite me.
‘l’d bite her back’, said one passer by. I wouldn’t do that, I thought, than its people like you who would report me and put me behind bars’.
Everyone was looking. I felt embarrassement. Soon she got up, as she thought I was going to leave her behind.
On another occasion, I took ruby to the funfair with her elder cousins. It was a hot summers day, she went on all the rides. Soon I ran out of money, She wanted to buy a toy from the stall and started to cause a scene.
I’ve only got the bus fare left, how are we going to get home if I spend this’, I said.
We rushed out of the funfair. We managed to get on the bus, Ruby set on my lap, the bus was very crowded. She cried all the way. Her cousins set at the back of the bus.
As she sat on my lap she pushed with her legs against the front seat and was making me feel very uncomfortable by squeaking my stomack. She cried and cried and would not stop. It was a fifteen minute trip to get back to our bus stop. As we rang the bell to get off a rather drank man with a can in his hand shouted as loud as he could,
‘S - h u t - U - P’, he shouted as loud as he could. Everyone was looking,
Ruby was as quite as a mouse. I was so releived that it was the right stop he said this to me.
I kept my self calm with my daughter, I can manage him, so I calmly smiled and I looked at him
‘That did the trick, thank you very much’, I replied and hurried of the bus.
I carried Ruby home, Her cousins told me that a few woman at the back of the bus were making false accusation and making sniddy remark.
One thought that I was pinching her to make her cry.
Who would think that a mother in a very hot weather traveling with a bad tempered child had nothing better to do than to make herself feel better than to pinch and make a child cry?.
That was it, it was no good, I couldn’t cope with her behaviours. I rang the local clinic who told me to ignore other people and don’t let them put you down. At last some one was on my side and could understand what I was going through with a a trantum child.
Another appointment was made to see a child chritist, she was in a good mood today, We managed to get on the bus to get to uxbridge. We had no problem in finding the clinic. A Woman introduced herself to me, and asked me and ruby to follower her upstairs. We were led into a small room. It was very quite. Ruby sat on my laps, the woman sat oppisit me. As she talked and asked questions, Ruby got off my lap and went to the toy carbard in the corner. She picked up a teddy bear and put it on my lap. And than went back to play with her toys. This action told the sssss
That Ruby wanted another baby, that’s why she placed the teddy bear on my laps.
I was trying to tell the doctors that I had enough dealing with ruby and my other two boys were being ignored and that I no way would have another one, thank you.
I left the clinic not to return again how can she tell me to have another baby when I am having difficulty in looking after this one.
I rather buy, my daughter a 30 pound toy doll, which looked like a real baby to keep her quite. ‘It poos and wets itself ‘, I said.
It kept her quite for a few week, before the novaty wore out.
Mother nature, shone some luck on us. My brother’s wife was due to have a baby soon. We would go around there house every day. She had a lovey boy, Ruby loved him striaght away. At last she found what she was looking for a baby.
