AUTHOR
Peter Rivendell
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Who me? Born in 1962. Wrote prolifically as a teenager, heavily influenced by books & the music of the time. Stopped writing for 20 years more or less. But started again...
Some of the work here dates from the "early period" - 1979-1982. The rest is since 2000.
I`ve no idea whether I`m a better writer now or then. Maybe I was never any good! I`ve always wondered.
Feedback most welcome...

I've not visited this site at all since January 2006 as I shortly after discovered the unfettred joys of blogging. I'm still writing and actually had a very good summer of writing. I'm posting a recent poem here now but all my recent work is available on my blog - take a look - http://peter-rivendell-poems.blogspot.com/

Thoughts Of A War
Peter Rivendell

He shifts his suitcase from one hand to another,
Silently gauging the weight.
Contemplating gravity and situations.
Collar turned up against the rain,
He leaves the station and turns.
Converging in the distance,
The railway lines close that part of his life.
The final break.
Periods of rehearsal over the years
Seem irrelevant and with thoughts of home,
He switches to thoughts of a war.
With the air of a concerned stranger,
He surveys the unfamiliar scene,
And makes an arbitrary decision to stay
    - as if leaving were one of his alternatives.
A figure brushes past his static form,
And heat flushes in a self-administered wave of humiliation.
In staggered forward motion,
He wonders if there is life on other planets,
And thinks of the life that is his.
A bus shambles past,
Negotiating a slope and advancing age
Like a red warning that bears no hope.
The taxis, lined up to swallow the intermittent stream,
Are financially out of bounds and the girl in the callbox
Smiles as she dials.
He can`t see a clock.
Is impatient with time.
He suggests what he might be waiting for,
And realises that he awaits a signal.
He comes from a town, but his instinctive reactions
Suggest pre-industrial climes.
He thinks of one person,
Perceived through an already vague notion of "home",
And ponders whether he will see him again.
Separation by distance and social design.
Can he be replaced in this new escapade?
This is his long-awaited chance to lay the foundations for some future.
A big opportunity in a big town. In a lot of rain.
And he glances down at feet of clay.

"You've fallen pray to the 'too much telling and not enough showing,' [my own problem at times, too]." -- Ulysses Hero, England.
"Something special, as most of the literature found here... I can see that “Thoughts of A War” is about movement. Movement of the mind, soul and tears, towards a condition in which the three will be able to properly “clothe” the individual. The words are simple, but what they have to say makes them somehow instable from a semasiological point of view. Not all words can deal with the amount of feeling we try to put in them... This usually happens when translating: sometimes the result is not even close to the original, and the feeling is gone. Anyway, that’s the way this poem is, and is not bad at all. I would say... eight or nine. See the young Verlaine in original and you will know what I meant. " -- Boris Merner, Bucharest, Romania.
