Tsp - Part Five
David B Doc Byron

November 22/nd, 1963
12:52 p.m.

The air on the roof of the library was
surprisingly warm, compared to how chilly it was down below.
It was a sunny day, not too many clouds, a perfect
day for a parade or a picnic in the park or a walk
around downtown Dallas.
I blocked these more pleasant thoughts from my
mind as I took the rifle from it's case and
loaded it, then lit up a smoke. I sat down and
leaned against the edge of the roof, my head just
down far enough not to be seen by the crowd below.
I looked at my watch; 12:57 p.m.

As I tossed my smoke on the roof and stepped on it,
I stared up at the sky and silently thanked God
for the lukewarm breeze blowing that day, almost
wishing it would pick me up and take me to some
place far away.
To a place with no more death, no more blood,
no more cries of stark terror from innocent
bystanders as they watched someone close by being
shot. But my daydreams were suddenly and inevitably
interrupted by the annoying sound coming from my
wristwatch. I pushed the button back in get it to
stop, then picked up my rifle and took careful
aim.
As I slowly leveled my sights on the black
convertible, I heard the shots ring out.
Two of them.
I didn't even realize until later that I'd squeezed
off two shots myself. Through my lens I saw a blur
of crimson red spatter a woman's face, and a man
sitting next to her rocking back and forth like a
broken jack-in-the-box, then slump over dead, his
head obliterated.
I heard the echoes of people screaming in my head,
the anguished cries wrapping themselves around my
brain like a visegrip that wouldn't let loose.
I looked over the edge and down for a few seconds,
to see small, stick sized people running in all
directions, car horns blaring, and a woman who
appeared to be taking pictures with a camera.
The black convertible had drifted to the side
of the road, and cops and men in suits were now
surrounding it.

That's all it took to end a man's life; make
his wife a widow, his children fatherless, and a
whole nation to go into a state of mourning that
would last for years to come.
Just seconds.
I quickly dropped my rifle, grabbed my suitcase,
and walked down the back steps to the basement
level of the building, then outside.
When I walked out into the sunlight, and into the
middle of the frenzied onlookers, I looked just
like a tourist who happened to be in the wrong
place at the wrong time. I've always noticed that
in times of chaos, a killer can blend into a crowd
as easily as a bullet can shatter bones and tear
up internal organs. It's so easy to take a life
these days, in these times of modern methods of
assassination.
It doesn't really take any real training, either,
just the willingness to take another man's life for
money.

As I walked down the street to my waiting vehicle,
I contemplated these things, and even began to
contemplate who I really was anymore.
I still am.
