Where Does She Go From Here?
Desi Williams

Gray mist swept across the barren plain. A leaf, torn and forgotten, aged with wind and rain, scuttled aimlessly about the sky. Below it, a lonely figure trudged hopelessly through the nothingness. Her feet, bloody and scarred from her journey, left scarlet tracks in her wake. Whenever she stopped walking, another lesion would appear on her left arm, and would therein bleed profusely. Her plump body heaved sighs and sobs of exhaustion as she wearily pressed on. However, she never saw this as a death sentence. Seeing these things enabled her to move forward, towards that ray of faith and optimism on the other side of the despairingly bleak horizon. With these issues came a feeling of great liberation. But she knew, somewhere deep down inside her she knew there would come a time when she wouldn’t need these wounds, and she would be free of her iniquities. That time came all too soon.
The scenes change dramatically. Strobe lights stream quickly over her face. Music blares in her ears no matter which way she turns. Now, she holds a long-necked bottle in her left hand, and a joint laced with angel dust in the other, as she dances on the counter top of the local bar. Her lanky body sways to and fro, and men swoon as her bosom bounces and she jumps down to pick a guy out of the crowd. She pushes that one down and walks away, leaving them all to gawk at her fine ass.
Cut to her apartment. She lies down on her silken covers, and weeps. Her old sins may have passed away, but they were inexplicably replaced with new shame and irrevocable habits. Stumbling to the bathroom, she pulls open the mirror. Her head is spinning like a merry-go-round as she unlocks her pill bottle full of smooth, chalky tablets just waiting to be consumed. As she pops one right after the other, she adds more evil substances to her body and compounds the damage she has already done, physically, psychologically, mentally, and emotionally. Swallowing the last one, she slumps to the floor, unconscious.
Pools of iridescent colors swim Green Yellow Purple Pink Blue… Warm cold frigid sweltering hot freezing… white lights haze of silver… pieces of music She can see… float… Falling down stairs climbing up a ladder… swirl twirl furl…
She opens her crystallized emerald eyes and registers the sun pouring through her window and the gauze curtains billowing in the draft. A jackhammer pounds away in her brain, in her temple. An urge erupts in her stomach, and she makes it one second too late to the toilet, spewing vomit all over the lavender shower curtain. Tears roll down her ashen cheeks and die on her chapped lips. In that moment, she determines she will never live this kind of life again.
But where does she go from here?
