Winter Wind Judith Goff
A forlorn gray sky, tattered clouds
Snagged on rooftops before the wind
Chill wind that sweeps down upon me.
I huddle by the lake, our lake
Alone. I wonder where you are,
If you are. If you weren’t ... wouldn’t I know?
Wouldn’t I feel the absence of you?
Wouldn’t my heart lie still, beating only
From memory rather than from desire to be?
If you were not still on this earth,
Wouldn’t I cease to exist, to cast a shadow
On this canvas of despair?
Wouldn’t this shell that was once me
Shatter and crumble like brittle leaves…
If you were gone could there still be me?
And if you are still in this world
Isn’t there a chance … another chance
That the you that is you and the me that is me
Could once again be as we were … one soul?
