My Artificial Heart (21)
"God, no!" The bullet pierced right into her! "Dreeve, please don't let them put me all alone in a box! I don't want to be alone! Please don't let them take me away! What I've seen after this was nothing but darkness! I'm afraid of the dark Dreeve! I don't want to go there!" "I won't let them take you Tammy! I won't!" "The dark is scary, it's so scary, I can't stand it. I don't want to go there! Dreeve? Where are you?" "I'm right here Tammy, you'll make it! Just hang on!" "Dreeve? Where are you!?" Her song quieted. "Tammy I'm right here!" I called out to her. "Dreeve? Dreeve! No! Please don't leave me! Please don't! DREEVE!!" Quieter and quieter.... "Tammy, don't leave now! I'm right here! Don't leave now!" "Dreeve..." Quiet. Dead quiet. "Tammy?" I hated the silence, I had to make noise, anything to get rid of the terrible silence. "I can't see! I can't see, please don't leave me alone in the dark! Dreeve, Dreeve, Dreeve....." With a final waning beat, her song ended. "Tammy!!!" I didn't have the strength to cry. I stared at her mangled corpse and begged her to sing again. But she couldn't, she had stopped, she had finally stopped. I caressed her metallic body, and soothed her quietly into death. My artificial heart, my beautiful Tammy, was dead. I stared at her mangled corpse, she really was gone. The one girl that loved me so selflessly, my best friend, my only friend in this painful world! She really was gone... "I'll miss you Tammy, I'll miss you so much. I won't leave you alone! I'll be there with you soon!" I stroked her mettalic cyndrical body, a river of blood gushing through my fingers. I didn't care what else was happening, I simply laid their slumped against the wall and hoped that I would hurry up and die. I stared into the gray ceiling of the bank, and whispered Tammy's name over and over. As if to mimic her constant song. My eyes slurred over until I caught the image of Trissa. She was no more than a couple feet away from me, staring in complete shock. "Dreeve, it's really you." Her eyes moved from side to side quickly. As if she didn't know what to do or say. A chill colder then the coldest plains of Antarctica overcame me. I was frozen in death's cold shadow, and this time it promised that it would not let me go. That this time it would see me through to the very end. "Uh, Tris... Trissss." I couldn't even speak, a burst of blood came gushing out my mouth. There were so many things I wanted to say to her, so many apologies, so many insults, so many things that I needed to clear up, but so little time, so little life left in me! I had to show her the most important thing there was to me. Pain became meaningless, death became non-existant, with nothing but pure sorrow I pushed myself off the bloodied carpet. Standing up, I wavered from side to side, but my eyes were intent on Trissa. I removed my hands from the hole in my chest and showed Trissa Tammy's mangled corpse. She stepped back, her hands on her mouth. "Oh my God, Dreeve. Why did you do that!?" "I'm, ssssorr, sorrry.." Not much more time... "Don't let them, p-put Tammy away in a box without me! Please tell them that!" My knees were about to colapse, I begged death to give me just a little more time! "Tammy is the one I love! I never want to leave her alone! She's afraid of being alone!! Tell them that! Tell them that for me at least!" I fell forward, my face slamming flat into the ground. At first I convulsed in a fit of pain, but then my body sensing the envitable just stopped trying. My breathing simply stopped, and with my last breath I whispered out: "Tammy..." My body went completely limp. All strength, all emotion, all thoughts faded away. Death, all ending, all-powerful death, gathered me up in its arms and pulled me away. Pulled me away... Chapter 32: A Chocolate Box A distant sobbing. She was there, alone, crying in complete fear. I ran through the darkness, I ran through a million universes. I ran through fear, through death, through love, all of these things I had once though important were now meaningless! I ran for her, and nothing else. I ran and ran until finally I bumped into her. "Tammy!" "Dreeve!? Dreeve is that you?" "It's me Tammy, it sure is!" She threw her arms around me. I lifted her up in my arms and held her close, so as to keep each other warm. "I was so scared of the dark. But now you're here, I won't be afraid anymore!" "Me either Tammy." "Where are we?" Tammy wondered. "Is this heaven? Or is this... hell?" "Neither." I stated simply. "Neither?" "God, he couldn't decide. So I just got up and left. I don't care, heaven sounds boring anyways. I told Trissa, I told them to never let them put you away alone in a box. At least she did that one favor for me. Heaven is stupid, so is hell. All of it! Meaningless. You are all the purpose and meaning I need." I smiled at Tammy, and she smiled back at me. Her tear filled eyes shining in the darkness. "You did all that just to keep me company?" She smiled and I laughed. "Its better to be trapped in a box with company then with no one at all." We held each other close, so that we were one once again. "It's much better with company..."
