Significance-First Draft (3)
Patrick Collins

TEAM:
“LETS WIN!”

CUT TO:
Montage of second half. The LASER BEAMS strike back with quite a vengeance. They steal the ball three times, and take it back the other way. The first two times it is blocked by the goalie. But the third, JONNY makes a perfect goal. THE LASER BEAMS on the sidelines, including KRISTEN cheer manically; all except COACH JOHN, who mutters to himself.

COACH JOHN (whispering to self):
“Tied at two, tied at two, tied at two, it’s tied at two. Make ONE more goal. Just one more goal…”

CUT OVER TO:

COACH NILLES:
“Just one more goal…just ONE more…”

The montage goes on a bit more. Neither side makes a goal.

COACH JOHN:
“WE are looking stronger, but not strong enough out there.”

COACH NILLES:
“Did I ask for your narration, Spearsmith?”

COACH JOHN backs away slightly.

COACH NILLES:
“KRISTEN ROLAND!”

KRISTEN jumps from her seat and runs over to COACH NILLES.

KRISTEN:
“Yeah Coach?”

COACH NILLES:
“You read to play now Kris?”

KRISTEN:
“Yeah. Where do I g…”

COACH NILLES:
“Right side offence. Go now!”

He slaps KRISTENS on the back and she takes off running.

COACH NILLES:
“Bryan! Sub off! Bench now!”

A boy runs off the field, and KRISTEN takes his place.

COACH JOHN:
“Go Kris!”

We see more of the game compressed with time lapses.

REF:
“Five minutes left!”
The COSMOS have the ball and are taking it towards the goal.

COACH JOHN:
“Luke! Take it from them! Take it now!”

COACH NILLES:
“Done let it get past ya buddy! Don’t let it get past ya! Don’t let it by ya!”

LUKE looks nervous as the current holder of the ball takes it towards him. He lunges towards the COSMO player, but it gets past him and the COSMO player continues to the goal line.

COACH NILLES:
“NO!”

It looks as if nobody is in the player’s path to the goal. But then…KRISTEN comes out of no ware and boots the ball almost all the way to the other end of the field. LOGAN, an offensive player, receives it.

COACH JOHN:
“YES! GO LOGAN!”

He takes it to the goal and shoots. The goalie gets it. The LASER BEAMS groan.

COACH NILLES:
“It’s okay guys! Go back, backup! Back up! Back up!”

The players move back as the COSOS goalie prepares to kick the ball towards the opposite end of the field.

LUKE intercepts it from the COSMOS, and passes it to KRISTEN.

COACHES AND TEAM TOGETHER:
“Go Kris go! Go! Go!”

REF:
“One minute!”

KRISTEN takes the ball up field.

COACH NILLES:
“Shoot Kris! Shoot the ball now!”

But two COSMO players block KRISTEN’s path to the goal. She instead, passes it to LOGAN.

KRISTEN:
“Go Logan! Go!”

LOGAN shoots the ball straight into the goal, and it drops silently behind the goalie. The ref then blows his whistle.

REF:
“Game over! LASER BEAMS WIN!”

The team goes crazy! KRISTEN runs over to LOGAN and gives him a huge hug, the rest of the team high five each other. COACHES NILLES and SPEARSMITH start to jump up and down.

COACH NILLES:
“Team in! Team in!”

The team runs of the field and to the coaches.

COACH NILLES:
“Now didn’t that feel good guys? Wasn’t that worth the wait?”

KRISTEN:
“Oh yeah!”

COACH NILLES:
“You guys played your butts off out there, and you all did a great job, but special thanks has to go out to Logan Warner, who saved the day! And to Kristen Roland, who passed it to him instead of taking us stupid coaches advice and taking the shot for herself, which would have been blocked. And the rest of you all did amazingly. Hands in!”

COACH JOHN:
“Can I do the honors this time coach?”

COACH NILLES:
“Sure thing rookie.”

COACH JOHN:
“Yes sir! On three: ‘Yay COSMOS, nice game’. One, Two, Three!”

TEAM:
“Yay Cosmos! Nice Game!”

COACH JOHN:
“Okay now go shake hands.”

Both teams form a line and shake hands with all the players of the other team, saying “good game” to each one. Then they all go back to the Coaches.

COACH NILLES:
“Okay now, we are going to have a pizza party on Monday, at Pat’s Pizza, okay? We are going to pay for all the pizza and drinks you want. And come with you soccer uniforms on. Now hands in one more time.”

They all put their hands in.

COACH JOHN:
“On three, we say ‘great season’. One, tow, three!”

TEAM:
“GREAT SEASON!!!”

CUT TO:
-INT-
Roland Household-
Night

The lights are off, and we hear the door open and see the shapes of two people enter the house, MRS. ROLAND and KRISTEN. We hear a faint “CLICK” and the lights come on. Right when the switch is thrown, we…

CUT TO:
Close-up-
MRS. ROLAND

She is completely clean and nice looking. Then we PAN OVER to KRISTEN, she is covered in sweat and dirt, and a bloody scratch visible through a tear on the shoulder of her t-shirt.

KRISTEN:
“I’m gonna go take a shower, Mom.”

MRS. ROLAND:
“Okay, now you don’t have to go to the pizza party for two days, so that gives me time to wash your uniform. Your father is gonna be back from work any minute. He is very upset that he wasn’t able to get off for the last game, but he was cheering for ya.”

KRISTEN:
“That’s good. You and him have been a great help. I will tell him thanks when I get back upstairs.”

MRS. ROLAND:
“Okay. Bye. Oh! And Kris?”

KRISTEN:
“Yeah?”

MRS. ROLAND:
“Good season sweetie.”

There is a pause; KRISTEN smiles slightly.

KRISTEN:
“Thanks Mom.”

KRISTEN then heads down stairs to the shower.

CUT TO:
Roland Family Bathroom-

KRISTEN enters the room, sits down on a wicker chair situated next to the bath tub/shower. She unties her left cleat and throws it in a pile, and then she struggles to remove her long soccer sock. After that she slides off her sweaty and muddy shin guard. Then she goes over to the other cleat, but then pauses. We slowly zoom up to her face. KRISTEN lets out a silent snort, and smiles.

KRISTEN (softly to herself):
“Good season Kris.”

Then she proceeds to untie her right cleat.

FADE TO:
Kristen’s Bedroom-
Night

KRISTEN is now dressed in her pajamas, and her hair is wet from the shower she has just taken. She is brushing her hair. As she does this she glances over to her large PILE OF HOMEWORK. She shows us a mischievous lop sided grin and then she picks op one of the books and opens it.

FADE TO:
EXT
“PAT’S PIZZA” Restaurant-
Late Afternoon

There are many cars parked in the parking lot. Many of them with “I am a proud soccer mom” bumper stickers on them, and one that says: “Life is a Kick in The Ball”. The ROLAND FAMILY CAR pulls into a spot. The driver is not MR. ROLAND this time, but MR. ROLAND. KRISTEN unbuckles her seat belt and opens her car door.

MR. ROLAND:
“Have a good time Kris. Love you.”

KRISTEN:
“Thanks Dad, love ya too!”

Then KRISTEN steps out of car, she is wearing her full soccer garb. She gives her dad one last wave, and walks inside the Pizza joint.

CUT TO:
INT-
“PAT’S PIZZA”

The whole soccer team is there, they all wave.

COACH NILLES:
“Come in and join the party Kris!”

KRISTEN goes and sits at a table next to LOGAN, the player who scored the winning goal (with KRISTEN’S help of course).

KRISTEN:
“I call a piece of that pepperoni!”

LOGAN:
“Okay, I hate pepperoni.”

KRISTEN:
“How in the freaking heck can you not like pepperoni?”

LOGAN:
“Okay, name something you don’t like.”

KRISTEN:
“I’ll pass!”

BILLY POWERS, another player leans across the round table.

BILLY:
“Smart move Kris. Quite while you are ahead, eh?”

LOGAN:
“If ya can’t say something nice, don’t say nothing at all!”

KRISTEN:
“What is this, cliché’ day?”

They all laugh.

BILLY:
“I think they should invent a cliché’ day. That would be so much fun.”

KRISTEN:
“It would be lame is what it would be!”

JEFF SPEARSMITH, COACH JOHN’s younger brother leans over to join in.

JEFF:
“This is like watching Mortal Combat and not having the controls!”

KRISTEN:
“I don’t play video games, so I wouldn’t know…”

LOGAN:
“You don’t play video games? How in the flaming heck…”

KRISTEN:
“Wan a pepperoni up your nose Loge?”

The table laughs.

LOGAN:
“Better than up my mouth.”

KRISTEN:
“Touché’!”

JEFF:
“Anyway, do any of you have a PS2?”

CRAIG WEBBER raises his hand.

CRAIG:
“I do! My parents got if for me for Christmas.”

JEFF:
“Isn’t it the best?”

LOGAN:
“Nothing beats a Game Cube man! They are awesome!”

BILLY:
“All I have is an old N64. It’s still as awesome as it was back when my older brother got it about seven years ago.”

CRAIG:
“I still have an old Super Nintendo my brother had, and it’s really fun too. Mario cart is a great game!”

JEFF:
“A Super Nintendo? That’s like, ancient!”

BECKY WILLIAMS leans in.

BECKY:
“I can beat that, I have an OLD Nintendo. As in the first one! My older sister, who’s like 30 something, got if for Christmas when she was a teenager.”

BILLY:
“That’s awesome!”

KRISTEN:
“I can beat THAT!”

The whole team turns over to her.

JEFF:
“How?”

KRISTEN:
“My Mom still has an antique “Pong” set from the 70’s!”

JEFF:
“What’s that?”

LOGAN:
“Are you kidding? How can you say you like games and not know what pong is?”

KRISTEN:
“It was the first videogame!”

BILLY:
“It is pretty much two white lines that act as ping pong rackets, and a little white circle that’s supposed to be the ball.”

Then COACH NILLES comes through with a tray of two liter bottles of soda pop.

COACH NILLES:
“What are you guys talking about?”

LOGAN:
“Pong.”

COACH NILLES:
“You mean that old video game from the 70’s? My older sister had one of those. I think I still have it.”

BILLY:
“Kris has one.”

KRISTEN:
“My MOM has one. I don’t.”

LOGAN:
“She doesn’t play video games.”

COACH NILLES:
“Why not?”

KRISTEN:
“I don’t know, I just never got into them.”

COACH NILLES:
“I know you’re not used to a coach saying this, but you should. They are the trademark of my generation, dude!”

LOGAN:
“Coach, no offence, but never say the word “dude”.”

COACH NILLES:
“Hey! In about ten years all the lingo that comes outa your guys’s mouths is gonna sound ridiculous.”

KRISTEN:
“Far out! Groovy man!”

LOGAN:
“And I don’t think anyone should say that either!”

COACH NILLES:
“Anyway! Anyone want refills?”

There is a huge wave of requests from the team.

FADE TO:
PATS PIZZA-
Later that evening

COACH JOHN, gets up from his spot at his table (where he is sitting opposite from COACH NILLES), and goes over to the front counter and taps a waitress on the shoulder.

COACH JOHN:
“Uh Ma’me?”

WAITRESS:
“Yes?”

COACH JOHN:
“Could I borrow that?”

He gestures over to the bell that is used to tell waiters and waitresses when an order is up.

WAITRESS:
“Well, not THAT one, but I keep spares. I’m not supposed to do this.”

COACH JOHN:
“It will be greatly appreciated!”

WAITRESS:
“Maybe you could show that with a nice…ya know…TIP?”

COACH JOHN:
“Well, me and my associate already…”

WAITRESS:
“That was for the meal though. I mean for the extra trouble.”

COACH JOHN:
“Sure thing…uh…”

He reads her nametag.

COACH JOHN:
“…BETTY, I will be sure to give you a bit extra. Now hurry up please!”

WAITRESS:
“Payments up front Sir.”

COACH JOHN grabs his wallet from his pocket and pulls out a bill.

COACH JOHN:
“Here’s a ten.”

WAITRESS:
“Thanks Sir. Oh did you make any goals this year?”

COACH JOHN:
“No I’m not a play…JUST GO GET THE BELL!”

She leaves and opens up a drawer and gets a counter bell out.

COACH JOHN:
“Thank you, not go and serve another unlucky patron.”

The WAITRESS grins, looks at her ten-dollar bill, and walks out of frame. COACH JOHN grabs a ballpoint pin out of his pocket and taps it on the bell, thus ringing it.

COACH JOHN:
“ATTENTION LASER BEAMS! ITS TIME FOR AWARDS!”

The attention of the whole team is geared towards the two coaches.

COACH NILLES:
“Okay guys, this has been a great season. Some of you have been with us before, some are newcomers. I think all of ya did a whale of a job this season, and both me AND Coach John here are proud of all of you. And I think we need to have one round of applause for the whole team.”

The whole team claps.

COACH NILLES:
“Now heres the part where Santa gives out the presents! First one up is… Best defensive Player, and it goes to: CRAIG WEBBER!”

DRAIG goes up and receives is document. It is a normally shaped piece of paper and is identical to the one shown in the narration scene at the start of this film.

COACH NILLES:
“Good job buddy! Now onto, best Offensive player and it is…LOGAN WARNER!”

LOGAN does the same as CRAIG. Then a montage sequence starts, it shows various teammates getting their awards. Then we go back to real time again.

COACH NILLES:
“And now the last award, for the most significant rookie of the year. It goes to…KRISTEN ROLAND!”

KRISTEN blushes, and gets up from her seat and gets her award.

COACH NILLES:
“Good season Kristen. By the way! Since I am going to be a teacher, the Principle gave me permission to give you your report card in person. Here you go.”

He then hands KRISTEN an orange envelope with the school crest on it.

KRISTEN:
“Thanks Coach. See ya next year?”

COACH NILLES:
“Sooner than that. I’m gonna be a teacher remember? See ya later!”

KRISTEN:
“Okay.”

FADE TO:

Later-

KRISTEN grabs her backpack and puts it on.

KRISTEN:
“My Dad’s here! Thanks for a great season guys!”

The remaining teammates say bye together.

COACH JOHN:
“See ya Kristen!”

With that she leaves the building.

CUT TO:
EXT-
PAT’S PIZZA

MR. ROLAND sits in his parked car, and KRISTEN gets in the front seat next to him.

MR. ROLAND:
“Have fun?”

KRISTEN:
“Yep.”

She tosses her award and her report card on the back seat.
